Removal of Vegetation

The Town has established rules to protect the island's natural resources and keep them healthy for future generations.

  • The rules apply to trees and other plants, wetlands, dunes and beaches.
  • Different rules apply depending on the proposed project and its location.

Removal of Other Vegetation

The Tree Ordinance promotes the protection of native understory vegetation, including shrubs, grasses, and other plants, alongside trees.

  • Underbrushing (bush hogging) on undeveloped lots can be done only with written permission from the Town.
  • Care must be taken to stay out of all protected buffers and wetland areas.
  • Even on single-family lots, native plants and trees in the tidal wetland buffer must not be disturbed or removed.
  • On commercial properties, thinning a buffer may be allowed with Town approval.
  • Additional rules apply to marshfront and beachfront properties. While limited pruning for views may be permitted, the removal of plants or trees is not allowed.
